Geeta Dutt (Born Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhury) was a prominent Indian Playback Singer. She sang Hindi and Bengali songs, both in the films and non-film genre.
In 1946 she got the first break with an opportunity to sing in the film of “Bhakt Prahlad” for which K. Hanuman Prasad was the Music Director.
Geeta Dutt sang approximately 1200 Hindi film songs for many composers of forties, fifties and sixties. She sang a wide range of songs from romantic to sad songs, classical, bhajans to teaser songs. Geeta singing from the bottom of her heart. Her classical training was not at par with other female singers of her Era, but her spontaneity addded that special “Geeta Datt Touch” to her songs.
Geeta held a rare mellifluous tone in her voice and all kinds of emotions into whatever song she sung. From 1947 to 1949 Geeta was the Queen of playback songs. In 1951 film “Baazi” a crime thriller directed by Guru Datt, jazz-based songs she sang, which instantly made her more popular. She work from traditional songs to western-beat tunes. She became much demanded by all music directors who had to compose completely opposite songs for a film.
Based on the available information, she must have sung for more than 100 composers. When Geeta sings “Thandi Thandi Pawan Aa Rahi Hain” one can truly feel the cool breeze touching the senses. Arguably her sweetest and most magical non – filmi song! She has sung in many other Indian languages including Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri and Punjabi.

During Geeta’s recording of song for the movie “Baazi” she mets its young up and coming Director Guru Datt. Their romance culminated in marrige on 26 May 1953.
