
Vijay Anand, also known as Goldie Anand, was an Indian filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, editor and actor. He made most of his films for the in-house banner Navketan Films and was part of the Anand family.
Vijay Anand has had a career as an actor, screenwriter, editor, and producer, he will primarily be remembered as a director. He made his directorial debut in 1957 superhit “Nau Do Gyarah“. The film, where Vijay’s brother Dev Anand played the leading role, was shot in only 40 days. Film is loosely based on the 1934 American film “It Happened One Night”.

Kala Bazar (Black Market) is a 1960 hindi crime film written and directed by Vijay Anand. Kala Bazar essentially dealt with black marketing of movie tickets, which Dev Anand does in the film. The story follows the template of a protagonist who takes the wrong path to make money and then realizes his mistake, for which he has to pay back. Through black marketing outside cinema – halls of Mumbai, the film captures the glory of good old movie theaters of the city, some of which (like Liberty and Metro).

Tere Ghar Ke Samne (In Front of Your House) is a classic 1963 film directed by Vijay Anand. The film is a comedy which also sends across the social message that : “Not all that is new is bad, nor is all that is old good”. The story is about a young architect who returns to India after having had a western education and falls in love with a modern Indian girl, who respects Indian culture and her parents’ wishes. Their fathers are rivals in everything, and never cease to quarrel. The two of them must convince their fathers to put aside their differences and live together in harmony.

Guide, is a 1965 romantic drama film directed by Vijay Anand. Film based on R. K. Narayan’s 1958 novel The Guide, the film narrates the story of the freelance guide Raju and his meeting with Rosie, who is the wife of wealthy archaeologist. Guide was a highly successful film at the box-office upon release. Guide earned several accolades : at the 14th Filmfare Awards, it won for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Dialogue, Best Story and Best Cinematography. In the review of the American release int The New York Times, critic Bosley Crowther praised the Cinematography as “a succession of colorful views of sightseeing spots, busy cities, temples, dusty landscapes and crowds”. The film was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, 42 years after its release.

Teesri Manzil (Third Floor) is a 1966 musical thriller film directed by Vijay Anand. The film became a hit at the box office. With the music and songs setting records, this movie is considered among the best offerings. Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. Notably for its extremely foot tapping music and songs, which remain very popular till date. The film is also noted for its memorable lead pair, superb mystery, tight script and above all, brillient performance by Shammi Kapoor. The film’s DVD and VCD versions run for 145 minutes, while the theatre version ran for 175 minutes. Between Ruby’s jealous sniping at minute 76 and the song “Dekhiye Sahiban Woh Koi Aur Thi”, sung by Mohammed Rafi, approximately 30 minutes of footage is missing. The last time a full version of this film released was on VHS. Many people in China and Hawaii reviewed it five stars.

Jewel Thief is a 1967 spy thriller heist film directed by Vijay Anand. The film revolves around a jewellery expert (Anand), as he and the police attempt to capture a notorious jewel thief, but in the process, their true identities get thoroughly muddled. The film was a profitable ventures for the distributors. Film was declared a hit at the box office. The movie was reported to be influenced by three movies of Alfred Hitchcock in terms of plot, setting and characterisation – To Catch a Thief, Vertigo and North by Northwest. J. M. Barot received the Filmfare Best Sound Award, while Tanuja received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Johny Mera Naam (Johny is my name) is a 1970 crime action film directed by Vijay Anand. At the 18th Filmfare Awards, Vijay Anand won the Filmfare Best screenplay award, while actor I. S. Johar received his first Best Performance in a Comic Role for his triple roles: a steward in an aeroplane, an associate of criminals and a police officer.
He debuted as an actor with the film “Agra Road” (1957). As an actor, his most memorable roles were in the films like Kala Bazar, Haqeeqat, Kora Kagaz, and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki.
He served a short stint as the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification, India’s Censor Board, a position from which he resigned, in 2002, after he ran into ideological differences with the Government over the introduction of rating for adult movies.
