The film blends elements of romance, drama, and suspense, creating an engaging narrative that resonated with audiences.

In Neel Kamal, Sita, portrayed by Waheeda Rehman, is a young woman who unknowingly carries the burden of her past life. During a college trip, Sita’s peculiar habit of sleepwalking leads her to wander onto a railway track, where she is saved by a man named Ram, played by Manoj Kumar. Impressed by Ram’s bravery and character, Sita’s father decides to arrange their marriage.

After they are married, Sita’s sleepwalking continues, but it becomes apparent that it is not just a harmless habit. Her sleepwalking episodes gradually unveil a deeper connection to her past life, where she is drawn to places and memories from a forgotten existence. This discovery reveals that her actions during sleep are linked to an unresolved love story from her previous incarnation, complicating her present life and adding a mystical layer to the romantic thriller.

The story delves into a mystical love story that transcends lifetimes. Chitrasen, an artisan played by Raaj Kumar, was deeply in love with Princess Neel Kamal (Sita’s past incarnation). However, due to societal constraints and the king’s refusal to accept a commoner’s love for his royal daughter, Chitrasen is cruelly punished—buried alive for daring to aspire to the princess. His love for Neel Kamal remains immortal, and even after death, his soul lingers for centuries, waiting for the chance to reunite with her.

In the present day, Sita, begins experiencing strange sleepwalking episodes that lead her to Chitrasen’s burial site. It is through a haunting song that Chitrasen’s soul beckons her to fulfill their unfinished love story. Sita’s involuntary connection to her past life creates turmoil in her current one.

At home, her mother-in-law is a harsh and suspicious woman who misconstrues Sita’s strange behavior as evidence of an extramarital affair. Along with her equally hostile sister-in-law, Chanchal (Shashikala), they make life unbearable for Sita, adding to her emotional burden. The only person who shows her any support is Giridhar (Mehmood)

In the climactic turn of Neel Kamal, Sita’s struggles intensify as her sleepwalking condition and connection to her past life continue to cause distress in her present-day marriage. Despite Sita’s father’s repeated warnings to Ram’s family about her sleepwalking, the family becomes convinced that Sita has died. Under the manipulative influence of Giridhar, Ram’s family even begins preparing for a second marriage for Ram. However, Giridhar, who is actually on Sita’s side, informs Ram in secret that Sita is still alive and is now pregnant.

One fateful night, while traveling by train, Sita’s sleepwalking episodes reach their peak. She pulls the emergency chain to stop the train at Chitrapur station, where Chitrasen’s burial site lies. Guided by her past life, Sita arrives at Chitrasen’s place. There, she has a poignant encounter with the immortal soul of Chitrasen, during which they briefly relive their tragic past. This meeting serves as the final closure Chitrasen has been waiting for across centuries. With their love story finally resolved, Chitrasen’s soul is freed, releasing him from his eternal longing.

Sita falls unconscious after this encounter, but Ram arrives just in time to rescue her. With the burden of the past now lifted, Sita and Ram are finally able to move forward and live a happy life together, free from the haunting shadows of a past life.

The soundtrack of Neel Kamal was composed by the renowned music director Ravi Shankar Sharma, with lyrics penned by the legendary Sahir Ludhianvi. The music of the film became a key element of its success, blending emotional depth with melodious tunes. One of the standout songs from the film is “Baabul Ki Duaayein Leti Jaa”, sung by the iconic Mohammed Rafi. This heartfelt song, which captures the deep emotions of a father’s farewell to his daughter during her bidaai (departure from her parental home after marriage), became immensely popular and is still frequently played during actual wedding rituals in India.

“Aaja Tujhko Pukare Mera Pyar” is another memorable sung soulfully by Mohammed Rafi, the song is a haunting and emotional call for love, echoing Chitrasen’s undying devotion to Sita’s past life. The melancholic melody and Rafi’s expressive vocals capture the longing and eternal love that defines Chitrasen’s character. This song not only enhances the supernatural and romantic elements of the film but also became one of the most beloved tracks.

The cinematography of Neel Kamal was handled by Fali Mistry, whose work significantly contributed to the film’s atmospheric and emotional depth. Mistry’s cinematography beautifully captured the supernatural and mystical elements of the story, particularly the sequences where Sita is drawn to Chitrasen’s burial site during her sleepwalking episodes.
