True Lies is a 1994 American action comedy film written and directed by James Cameron, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry Tasker, a U.S. government agent leading a double life as a spy, and Jamie Lee Curtis as his unsuspecting wife. The cast also includes Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Art Malik, Tia Carrere, Eliza Dushku, and Charlton Heston. The film is a remake of the 1991 French comedy La Totale!

To his wife Helen and daughter Dana, Harry Tasker appears to be a mild mannered computer hardware salesman frequently away on business. In reality, he is a top agent for Omega Sector, a secret U.S. counterterrorism agency. On a mission in Switzerland, Harry and his teammates Albert “Gib” Gibson and Faisil attend a party hosted by billionaire Jamal Khaled. There, Harry encounters Juno Skinner, Khaled’s art dealer, who is secretly working with “Crimson Jihad,” a terrorist group led by Salim Abu Aziz. While posing as a buyer to investigate further, Harry is attacked but fends off the terrorists though Aziz escapes. The mission’s aftermath causes Harry to miss the birthday celebration planned by Helen and Dana.

The next day, Harry visits Helen at her office to make amends but overhears her arranging a secret meeting with a man named Simon. Believing she’s having an affair, Harry uses Omega Sector resources to investigate and discovers Simon is a used car salesman posing as a spy to charm women. Disguised, Harry and his team apprehend both Helen and Simon. After scaring Simon into staying away, Harry and Gib interrogate Helen using a voice-altering device at a secret facility. They learn that Helen, stuck in a mundane routine, is craving excitement and adventure. In response, Harry sets up a fake espionage assignment for her, in which she is instructed to seduce a mystery operative unbeknownst to her, it’s actually Harry and plant a listening device in his hotel room.

Aziz’s men abruptly storm the hotel room, capturing both Harry and Helen and transporting them to a remote island in the Florida Keys. There, Helen finally learns the shocking truth about Harry’s double life as a secret agent. While in captivity, Harry discovers that Crimson Jihad using Juno’s resources has smuggled four MIRV nuclear warheads into the U.S., hidden inside antique statues. Aziz issues a chilling ultimatum: unless the U.S. military withdraws from the Persian Gulf, he will detonate a nuclear warhead in a major American city each week.

To demonstrate his seriousness, Aziz plans to detonate one warhead on the deserted island. Under the influence of a truth serum, Harry candidly confesses his espionage activities to Helen. The moment strengthens their bond, and the couple manages a daring escape. They soon learn that the remaining warheads are being transported to the U.S. mainland via the Overseas Highway, bypassing customs to avoid detection.

In the chaos that follows, Harry and Helen kill several terrorists, but Aziz escapes with one warhead aboard a helicopter. Helen is recaptured by Juno and taken in a limousine following the convoy. Gib and Omega Sector deploy two Marine Harrier jets, and Harry uses one to destroy part of the Seven Mile Bridge, stopping the convoy. He rescues Helen from the limo just before it plunges into the ocean, killing Juno. The warhead detonated on the island explodes harmlessly.

Harry learns that Aziz and his remaining men are holding Dana hostage in a Miami skyscraper and threatening to detonate the last nuclear warhead. He commandeers a Harrier jet to mount a rescue. Faisil infiltrates the building disguised as a cameraman, while Dana manages to steal the warhead’s activation key and escapes to the rooftop. Faisil takes down several terrorists as Aziz chases Dana onto a construction crane. Harry arrives just in time, rescues Dana, and after a dramatic confrontation, traps Aziz on a missile. He fires it into a terrorist laden helicopter, killing Aziz and destroying Crimson Jihad. Harry, Helen, and Dana are safely reunited.

One year later, Harry and Helen are both working as Omega Sector agents. During a mission at a formal party, they run into Simon now a waiter still pretending to be a spy. Upon recognizing them, Simon flees in terror. The film ends with Harry and Helen sharing a tango, while Gib humorously reminds them to stay focused on their mission.

The film was directed, produced, and written by James Cameron. True Lies marked Cameron’s first foray into action comedy. It also launched his production company Lightstorm Entertainment under a major deal with 20th Century Fox. As usual for Cameron, True Lies pushed technological boundaries, notably becoming the first film to have a production budget over $100 million and marking an early milestone for the visual effects company Digital Domain, which he co-founded.

Eliza Dushku as Dana Tasker, Harry and Helen’s rebellious teenage daughter, who is kidnapped by terrorists during the climax.

Charlton Heston as Spencer Trilby, the one-eyed head of Omega Sector, Harry’s stern and imposing boss.

While filming True Lies, Arnold Schwarzenegger recalled a harrowing moment during a scene with a horse, when a camera boom struck the animal, causing it to panic and rear near a 90-foot (27-meter) drop. Schwarzenegger quickly slid off, and a stuntman caught him an experience that deepened his respect for stunt performers, remarking, “That’s why I will always love stunt people.” Actor Art Malik, who played the villain Aziz, was drawn to the film for its “pantomime quality” and the opportunity to work with director James Cameron.

True Lies was notable for being the first film with a production budget exceeding $100 million, reportedly costing between $100–120 million. It was filmed over a seven-month schedule, using various prominent locations. The Rosecliff Mansion was used for the film’s early ballroom tango sequence, while the exterior of the Swiss chalet Harry Tasker infiltrates was actually Ochre Court. The closing ballroom dance and scenes set in the fictional Hotel Marquis in Washington were filmed in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The film editing was handled by a team of three accomplished editors, Conrad Buff IV, Mark Goldblatt, Richard A. Harris. Together, this trio crafted the film’s fast-paced rhythm, balancing high-octane action with sharp comedy and emotional beats.

The film’s cinematography was handled by Russell Carpenter. The score was composed by Brad Fiedel, blending orchestral and electronic music to match the film’s shifting tones between espionage thriller, comedy, and action spectacle.

Several prominent locations were used during production. The Rosecliff Mansion in Rhode Island served as the setting for the opening ballroom tango sequence, while Ochre Court was used for the exterior of the Swiss chalet infiltrated by Harry Tasker. It marked the first Lightstorm Entertainment film released under Cameron’s multimillion-dollar deal with 20th Century Fox and the debut major project for the visual effects company Digital Domain, co-founded by Cameron. True Lies was also the first film to have a production budget of $100 million.

The film received largely positive reviews and grossed $378 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 1994. Jamie Lee Curtis earned a Golden Globe and a Saturn Award for Best Actress, while Cameron received the Saturn Award for Best Director. The film was also nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards and BAFTAs, and for seven Saturn Awards overall. A streaming television series adaptation premiered in 2023.
