He is traveling to Bangalore to finalize her arranged match, planning to meet the prospective groom and introduce him to Laaj, as he is arriving with his doctor friend.

As Laaj and her father wait at the airport, he gently tells her, “The boy I want you to marry is a good person. I like him a lot but I want you to see him and decide for yourself.” Just then, the boy and the doctor approach. The boy pauses when he sees Laaj, smiles knowingly, and says, “She’s the same one.” As they reach the father and daughter, the doctor begins to introduce him, but before he can finish, Laaj looks up and is stunned—it’s none other than Prannath, the journalist who helped her through the wild night. Recognizing each other, they share a mischievous smile. Their small talk is playful and light, and it’s clear that a special connection has already formed. Laaj, now both amused and delighted by fate’s unexpected twist, gives her consent to the alliance. She realizes that life, indeed, is full of surprises.

Raj Khosla is a light romantic thriller that showcases his flair for blending charm, suspense, and realism into a breezy narrative. The film stars Waheeda Rehman and Dev Anand, and follows the story of a young girl who elopes with her lover only to discover his true motives leading to an unexpected journey with a helpful journalist. Raj Khosla’s direction stands out for its stylish treatment, smooth storytelling, and subtle infusion of suspense without overwhelming the romantic tone.

Interestingly, Khosla makes a brief cameo in the film, appearing as a film director during a shooting scene. Behind the scenes, there was a noted incident where Waheeda Rehman reportedly had a disagreement with Khosla over a costume a low-cut dress she was unwilling to wear leading to a heated exchange. The film was well received and is still remembered for its engaging screenplay, charming chemistry between the leads.

In Solva Saal, black-and-white cinematography played by Dwarka Divecha, a crucial role in enhancing the film’s nocturnal, suspenseful mood especially since much of the story unfolds in a single night. His use of shadows, lighting, and framing added a noir-like texture to the romantic-thriller tone of the film.

Dev Anand brought his signature charisma and breezy confidence to the role of a clever and witty journalist. His character, who initially follows the heroine for a story, gradually becomes her helper and protector. Dev’s light humor, smart dialogue delivery, and effortless style made the role engaging. He balanced flirtation and sensitivity well, especially in scenes where he comforts Laaj during her vulnerable moments.

Waheeda Rehman, still early in her career at the time, played Laaj with grace and innocence. She portrayed the transformation of a naive girl who runs away for love and later gains maturity through a night of unexpected events. Her emotional range—particularly in the scenes where she feels betrayed or fearful—was subtle yet effective. She handled the emotional depth and lighter romantic moments with equal ease.

The film thrives on the natural chemistry between Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. Their playful exchanges and growing bond through the night give Solva Saal its heart. The iconic song “Hai Apna Dil To Awaara”, picturized on them in a train compartment, perfectly captures their evolving relationship with flirtation, warmth, and unspoken affection.

Memorable music composed by S.D. Burman, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. One of the highlights of the film is the iconic train song “Hai Apna Dil To Awaara”, sung by Hemant Kumar, with a delightful mouth organ performance by R.D. Burman. The song beautifully captures the lighthearted chemistry between Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman and remains a classic.

Sheila Vaz appeared as the dancer in the song “Dekho Ji Mera Haal, Badal Gayi Chaal, Dekho Mohe Laga Solva Saal” in the film. This energetic and stylish dance number was choreographed in a film-within-a-film setting, shot in a movie studio, where the main characters Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman also land during their adventurous night. Her performance in this particular song added glamour and pace to the film, fitting the jazz-influenced rhythm of the number composed by S.D. Burman and sung by Asha Bhosle. The song is still remembered for its catchy tune and dynamic visuals.
